Windows Phone 8 has been known for a while now to have the internal codename "Apollo" and many things have been speculated during this time. Now we have more information from Pocketnow claiming that they saw an internal video of Joe Belfiore from Microsoft talking about the next major version of Windows Phone 8.
Here's a nice little list:
Hardware:
- Multi-core processors-This could mean dual- and quad-core processors coming to the Windows Phone. It has been speculated that WP8 might run on Qualcomms' Krait, Texas Instruments' OMAP4 and ST-Ericssons' NovaThor processor.
- More screen resolutions-Since late last year, rumors have been spreading of Microsoft supporting High-Definition (720p/1280x720) displays. It was said to be supported in Mango but that was never true seeing where the platform is now. Now rumor has it that a grand total of 4 resolutions will be supported. These were not specified but one could speculate them as being HVGA(320x480), WVGA(480x800), qHD(540x960) and HD(720x1280).
- Removable storage support-This could really help Microsoft get back to the top as support for MicroSD cards was something that users have been asking for. It also gives an extra level of convenience.
- NFC-This could be a blow to Apple if they don't support it by the iPhone 5 this year. Microsoft is supposedly creating a Google Wallet like experience but instead of the Google controlled experience, the carriers will have control. Google is probably wishing they would have went this way as even the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have the service enabled. This is also supposed to work across platforms as well.
- Windows 8 sibling-Windows Phone 8 is to have the Windows 8 kernel which allows both OS's to share things like network functions, security, and multimedia support. Apps from Windows 8 will also be easy to port to WP8 with this kernel change and all current apps will be supported as well.
- Apps-Skype is supposed to be a huge addition to Windows Phone and it is unclear whether or not Skype will be integrated or be a stand-alone app. Microsoft is also planning on the 100,000th app to be submitted by then.
- Increased OEM skinning-No there won't be a custom UI allowed BUT the camera app will be able to customized with what the OEM wants as features. Microsoft calls this a "lens app".
- Data Management-Microsoft is supposedly building an area where you can check data usage. Windows Phone will also search for open WiFi hotspots to lower data usage. Local Scout will also feature in Bing Maps locations of near-by WiFi hotspots. Internet Explorer 10 Mobile will also include server-side web page compression like Opera Mini to reduce size by up to 30%.
- Business features-Finally, Windows Pone 8 will feature full disk, native 128-bit BitLocker encryption. Yes, the one from Windows. Businesses will also be able to deploy apps behind a company firewall so now business will be able to have business apps that can not be seen by the normal end user.
All of these additions sound great and it me can't wait to load it up on my LG Quantum when it ships. If rumors are true, Windows Phone will truly catch up to the competition in most areas and out innovate in other areas.
